John Jacobsen Obituary

John “Jack” Jacobsen, 81, of Bemidji, MN, passed away on Sunday, January 28, at GoldPine Home.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Evangelical Free Church, Bemidji. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.

Jack was born in Bozeman, Montana, the son of Theodore “Ted” and Ruth Jacobsen. The family moved to Kabekona Lake in Laporte when Jack was seven. He graduated from Laporte High School in 1960, and from Bemidji State College in 1964 with a degree in business. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years after graduating and was stationed at Fort Gordon Georgia.

Jack was very athletic. He played football, basketball, and baseball in high school.

He also loved the outdoors. As a high school student, he was awarded the Frank Blair Award from the Isaac Walton League and a trip to Philadelphia for his works in conservation. Jack was a 4-H er where he met his wife, Delphine Forte, at the Hubbard County Fair in 1958. They were married nearly ten years later on August 5, 1967.

Jack worked for the University of Minnesota Extension in Grand Rapids, MN for two years and was then offered a job as a Financial Aid Officer at BSU until retiring in 1999.

Jack loved the outdoors fishing and hunting. He and four friends bought land and built a cabin, The Rack Shack, and have spent over 25 years enjoying it together. Jack and Delphine spent a lot of time fishing in Canada with the highlight trip being to Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territory.

Jack was a kind, loving and generous man who was a mentor to many young people. He was happiest when he was with friends, sharing his beautiful personality with them. He always saw the good in people and helped them however he could. He will be missed by many.

Jack is survived by his wife, Delphine; lifelong friend, Randy Newbold; Brother-in-laws, Robert Forte, and Curtis Forte; Nephews, Bob Forte, and TJ Forte; Nieces, Jody Lynn Hughes (Brian), Allison Forte (Chris French), Patti Winters, Tammy Guza (Stefan) and Jen Lagergren; and four-legged friend, Peppy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Bertha Schaul and Margy Ulrich, Nephews; Mike Phillips and Christopher Johnson.

Jack’s family would like to thank Dr. Emmanuel Erestain and GoldPine Home staff for their dedicated care.
